New Vitrifrigo SLIM150 Fridge Freezer 12V & 24V

For sometime we have been asked for a dedicated fridge freezer for the larger panel van conversions.  People were asking us for a compact fridge freezer with more volume, better internal storage and access and a good sized freezer for distance touring. It is great to know that Vitrifrigo are listening to their customers as they introduce the new Vitrifrigo SLIM150 which ticks all these boxes and more.

With 144 litres fridge capacity plus 16 litres of freezer capcity the Vitrifrigo SLIM150 was designed for the larger panel van conversions i.e. VW Crafter, Mercedes Sprinter, Citroën Relay, Peugeot Boxer and Fiat Ducato. At just 400mm wide and 450mm deep (front to back including the doors( the SLIM150 also has an angled top and base to fit the curvature of the vehicle roof and floor of the vehicle.  This means the fridge freezer can fit close to the internal side of the van allowing you to give a wider space infront of the fridge.  To further maximise the volume of the Vitrifrigo SLIM150 the compressor is separate to the cabinet, supplied pre-charged with couplings, allowing it to be remotely mounted and then connected to the cabinet once installed.

The main fridge with internal freezer compartment sits above a drawer fridge below. The fridge has an internal LED light, two ‘lock in’ shelves with fiddle upstands (plus the dividing shelf between the fridge and drawer below).  The 16 litre insulated internal freezer box is 3 star rated.  The drawer internals are manufactured in stainless steel with heavy duty stainless steel runners. The internal height of the drawer is 365mm making it ideal for storage of large drinks bottles.  The SLIM150 doors use Vitrifrigo’s innovative AIRLOCK catch system and both doors have a vent position to prevent unpleasant odors when the fridge is turned off.

The Vitrifrigo SLIM150 is controlled by an LED thermostat, with a graduated light to show how cold the temperature is set. It also has a fast chill boost setting to bring the fridge freezer down to temperature quicker and a night mode when the compressor is switched to its economy mode and the noise is minimised.  The Vitrifrigo SLIM150 is powered with a BD50 12/24 volt  compressor, which can be easily upgraded to 12/24V and 110/240V.

The aluminium evaporator plate (mounted in the fridge) has a 2m pipe set to connect to the compressor and the fridge is controlled by a mechanical thermostat, which has a probe connecting to the evaporator plate to sense the correct temperature.

Is Marine Air Conditioning Essential to Cruise the Mediterranean?

Spring is coming, the days are getting longer and the sailing season will soon be upon us.  So if its also time to get your boat organised for some Mediterranean cruising, have you got marine air conditioning on your wish list? if so, we can help.  We are offering 20% off the main Climma Marine Air Conditioning units throughout March, from the mini Compact 3.5 to the largest Compact 24, we will have the correct sized marine air conditioning unit for your boat.

When do you need Marine Air Conditioning?

While marine air conditioning is not essential for the cruising the Med, it is certainly an important consideration if you are likely to be spending any time in marinas. Anyone who has sailed or cruised the Med will know that a boat sitting at anchor will lie to the wind, so even a gentle breeze will massively help to reduce the heat on board, especially with your hatches open and wind scoops deployed.  Compare that with a marina where it is a very different experience. You are normally surrounded by high buildings reflecting the heat back into the dock area, preventing any breeze from circulating through your boat, while the sun beats down mercilessly all day.  In short, the boat becomes unbearably hot during the day and takes a very long time to cool back down in the eveningmaking it very uncomfortable to stay on board during the day and difficult to sleep at night.  So, while it is a relatively expensive upgrade, a properly installed, water cooled, marine air conditioning system will transform the boat, bringing the ambient temperature down to a comfortable level, allowing you to stay cool down below during the day and get to sleep at night.

What size marine air conditioning unit do you need?

You can run a 24,000 Btu of air conditioning unit from a 16A shore power supply, more than enough cooling capacity for the saloon of a decent sized 50 foot sailboat, so even if you don’t have space to install a generator it is still well worth fitting an air conditioning unit in your boat. The size of unit depends on several factors:

  • The volume of the space
  • The level of cooling required (normally referred to as the Temperature differential from ambient or delta T)
  • The amount of windows and glazing – a wheel house has a far higher cooling load than a sleeping cabin
  • The total number of people on board

Email us details of the boat make and model, an idea of the cabins you want to cool and where you are cruising and we will do the BTU calculation to give you a recommended BTU load for each space. We can then recommend the size of Compact unit and possible places to locate it.

Where to locate a marine Air Conditioner?

With air conditioning you are trying deliver dense cold air high up – ideally projected across the head lining of the cabin to give the best coverage of the space. This means the air grills need to be placed as high as possible. Low down outlets will free your toes and little else!  The AC unit itself is best fitted low down, for noise, vibration also for running condensate drains. An ideal location is under a bunk or seating area where the mattress or cushions act to baffle the noise, with the cold air then ducted up to the outlet higher up.  See the example below:

For aft cabin installations you can also look at fitting the unit in the lazarette and again ducting the air forwards and back – but be aware of where the steering quadrants are located and make sure you can get sufficient return air back to the unit.

Vitrifrigo 20 Litre Top Opening 12 Volt Fridge

Vitrifrigo have developed a new top opening 12 volt fridge ideal for narrow depth work surfaces in smaller campervan conversions. Perfect for models like the Toyota Granvia, VW Caddy and other conversions on smaller chassis.

The new TL20 has a decent 20 litre capacity in a top opening fridge that is only 230mm deep. The internal height of 325mm allows you to stand standard wine bottles to upright.
Installation is straight forward with the compressor mounted below the fridge. The thermostat is separate and can be mounted up to 0.8m from the fridge maximise the usable space inside the fridge.

Vitrifrigo Launch Super Slim 12 Volt Campervan Fridge

Vitrifrigo have developed a new super slim 12 volt campervan fridge for the latest Mercedes Vito conversion from Technoform and Wellhouse Leisure – launched at the Motorhome and Caravan Show at the NEC.  The new C25P super slim 12 volt campervan fridge has a total depth inc door of just 322mm enabling it to be fitted flush within the narrow kitchen units giving ample room for the extra wide bed that is a key feature of the conversion.

The C25P super slim features the BD Micro compressor from Secop, which at just 2.5kg reduces the weight of the fridge compressor by a massive 45% in turn reducing the total weight of the fridge to just 13kg.  To maximise volume of this 12 volt mini campervan fridge the compressor and cooling unit are remote to the cabinet on 1.4m of flexible pipe allowing the compressor to be mounted separately up to 1m away.

To make best possible use of the internal space, the C25P is set up as a larder fridge using a thermostatically controlled evaporator plate on the back wall instead of an ice box.

The C25P has excellent efficiency thanks to the BD Micro compressor and Vitrifrigo’s aluminium finned condenser (design and manufactured in-house) giving typical consumption of a tiny 0.3A/h (in UK summer time).

The fridge is supplied with grey trim and door panel, which can be replaced with 1mm panel to match the conversion as you can see in the Wellhouse Leisure conversion below.  The door is positively locked using the excellent Vitrifrigo Air lock catch (with vent position that keeps the fridge fresh when not and use) and the door hinging is interchangeable, left or right.

An innovative top opening 12 Volt fridge in the latest Uberbus Conversion

Poole based VW T6 camper converters Uberbus have just launched their latest conversion which features the Vitrifrigo C37L top opening 12 volt fridge.  The conversion is on a short wheelbase VWT6 and features their UBERBUS Flux rock and roll ribbed seat converting into a full width bed. By using a 12 volt top opening chest fridge, installed by the sliding door, Uberbus have kept the interior looking open and uncluttered while ensuring that the fridge is always easily accessible.

Positioned by the sliding door allows you to easily access the 12 volt fridge from outside the van or under an awning. With the addition of their kitchen unit which attaches neatly on the side allows you to cook alfresco with the fridge and cooker side by side – see image below.

At night the full bed is easy to set up and covers the whole width of the van with the mattress cushions running down the side and over the top of the 12 volt fridge lid. However, the mattress is set up to allow you to easily lift the corner to get to the milk for the morning cupper!

The C37L has a remote compressor and Uberbus have mounted this behind the fridge by the wheel arch. It requires 144cm2 ventilation in and out of the compartment that the compressor is located. This can be achieved with vents back into the living space and/or with floor vents through the vehicle floor allowing cool air from under the vehicle to be drawn up to the condenser on the compressor. This is particularly good if you have any plans to take the van to the south of France or beyond where the ambient temperatures are higher.

So How Efficient is this 12 volt fridge?

So what about power consumption?  In UK summer 25 degrees Celsius we would expect the C37L to consume at little as 1/2 an amp per hour. The compressor will run at 2.3A and should only need to run for around 15 minutes in the hour to maintain 4-6 degrees in the fridge.  This would equate to about 12-14 amp hours in 24 hours so with a 75 amp hour battery (37 hours of power), you would have more than 72 hours of power to run the fridge before you need to put any charge back in the battery. So even with a relatively small leiaure battery you have more than enough power to park up for a long weekend of surfing, cycling or simply chilling out!  Add a 40W solar panel to the roof and you will generate enough power in the day to run the fridge indefinitely – how cool is that!

New Steel Lock Locking Catch for Vitrifrigo Drawer Fridges and Freezers

Vitrifrigo have introduced a new stainless steel positive lock for their entire drawer range.  A significant improvement over their original South co supplied slam latch catch, Vitrifrigo have now designed their own unique ‘Steel Lock’ latch for their DW Drawer Series. To open the drawer you simply pull up on the ergonomically designed handle to release the catch.  When the door is closed the latch will automatically engage, with a reassuring audible click as the drawer is secured.

Wild camping with a 12 volt compressor fridge throughout Southern Europe

Is it possible to wild camp with a 12 volt compressor fridge in Southern Europe?

Mark Vose had his Citreon Relay converted by Affordable Van Conversions (AVC) in Somerset and after considerable research and investigation opted for a Vitrifrigo 12 volt compressor fridge over the traditional 3 Way.  After a summer spent touring throughout Europe, right down through southern Italy and across to Croatia we caught up with him at the recent Motorhome and Caravan Show at the NEC to get his first hand feedback on the performance of the fridge.

“We spent six months touring Europe in our Citroen Relay campervan conversion.  On the advice of others we had a 12 volt compressor fridge fitted rather than a three way fridge because we were spending a lot of time in hot countries and we planned to wild camp a lot of the time where we could not be sure we would always be able to level the van.

We were so pleased with our ninety litre Vitrifrigo fridge (C85i).  It holds a huge amount of food and drink, more than enough for two people on a long term basis.  With a 100 watt solar panel we could keep the fridge going for three or four days without plugging into the mains and in fact as we were touring around and never stayed in one place for more than three nights we had only three occasions when we had to plug into the mains in six months.

Although we were initially worried about the possible noise of a 12 volt compressor fridge, this proved not to be a problem despite the fact that I slept with my head next to it.  We are very pleased with our choice and have recommended your products to many campervan owners we met on our travels.”
